Youth entrepreneurship is essential to North Carolina’s economic prosperity – particularly in rural communities. Each year, more young people leave home to attend school and seek jobs without many viable prospects of returning. Engaging students in entrepreneurship at a young age shows them that by creating their own opportunities, they can return to their communities and help them grow.

The Chatham High School Business Plan Contest, sponsored by Brookwood Farms Barbecue, will be open to teams of two to three youth in grades 9 through 12 from Northwood High School, Jordan-Matthews High School, SAGE, and Chatham Central High School. In February and March, teams will compete in thre rounds where students will flesh out their business idea, analyze the market, and prepare financial statements. In April, the semi-finalists from the first three rounds will give short elevator pitches before a panel of judges; the top three finalists will be announced and awarded cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 at a banquet in May.
